Before the deep cold arrives, it’s important to start winter on the right foot. Make sure to perform a spa flush, complete water change, and replace your filters. Fresh, clean water handles cold temperatures far better and reduces the chances of cloudy water or strain on your equipment once winter hits.

Remember: Never unplug your spa in the winter. It needs constant power to keep the water circulating and prevent freezing. |
✅ Winter Checklist
1. Keep the water at the proper level and check the waterline daily
Cold weather causes more evaporation than people expect. Make sure your water stays above the skimmer lines so the pumps never run dry. Keep a hose stored inside your house so it doesn’t freeze and is always ready for quick top-ups.
2. Use the right cover and keep it locked
An insulated CSC cover helps trap heat and control energy costs. Keep it securely locked when not in use to prevent heat escaping and to stop snow and debris from working under the edges. Brush off heavy snow so the cover doesn’t warp. We also recommend using a cover guard, which gives extra protection and prevents water from entering any small rips you may not have noticed.
3. Clear snow and ice from around your spa
Shovel the pathway and keep the area slip-free. Clear ice away from the cabinet and steps so you can access your spa safely all season long.
4. Keep up with chemicals
Even if you aren’t using your spa every day, the water still needs care. Test and balance your chlorine, pH, and alkalinity regularly. Cold water slows chemical reactions, so give your spa extra time to fully circulate before adding the next chemical. Instead of the usual 30 minutes, wait 60 minutes between steps for more accurate test strip readings and better balance.
5. Keep an eye on your drain valve
Temperature swings can cause components to expand and contract. This can loosen or stress the drain valve, potentially causing a leak. Check it regularly throughout winter to ensure it’s tightly sealed.
6. Toque Up
While your hot tub keeps your body warm and relaxed, your head is still exposed to winter wind.
Wearing a toque helps you stay comfortable, prevents heat loss, and makes your winter soak even better.
7. Add winter accessories for comfort
Make your set-up safer and cozier:
- Towel warmers near your steps
- Floating thermal blankets to reduce heat loss
- A rubber mat or non-slip path
Swim spa owners: take extra care
Swim spas contain much more water and cool faster. Keeping the system running and ensuring covers are sealed is even more important. A rolling cover is especially helpful in winter thanks to its fast, easy operation.
Quick Recap
Before the cold sets in, start with a flush, fresh filters, and a water change. Then stay on top of water levels, cover care, filter maintenance, chemicals, and safety around your spa. With consistent checks, you can enjoy warm, stress-free soaks all winter long.
